Superleague set for 2010 expansion
By Jamie O'Leary
Superleague Formula will feature 12 rounds next year as part of a heavily-expanded schedule.
The 2010 calendar features two rounds in Britain, the season-opener at Silverstone, and a mid-season round on the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit.
Belgium will also host two rounds, at Spa-Francorchamps and Zolder, while the series will also venture outside Europe for the first time, with a round at Turkey's Istanbul track.
Superleague CEO Alex Andreu said: "Next year's calendar marks an exciting development in Superleague Formula's history.
"Thanks to the worldwide economic climate, we had to rein in our ambitions for this season, hence just the six rounds.
"It was always our intention to have 12 by year three however which I'm very pleased to say we've achieved. If the racing is half as good as this season, I'm certain we'll be in for a fantastic 2010."
[Date / Circuit]
April 3/4: Silverstone (UK)
May 1/2: Istanbul Park (TUR)
May 15/16: Assen (HOL)
May 22/23: Magny-Cours (FRA)

Sept 4/5: Adria Raceway (ITA)
Sept 18/19: Estoril (POR)
Oct 2/3: Spa-Francorchamps (BEL)

Superleague clarifies calendar
By Jamie O'Leary
Superleague Formula has moved to clarify that its 2010 schedule is not yet set in stone.
A provisional schedule was announced on Wednesday morning, including rounds at Silverstone and Brands Hatch.
However, a subsequent statement from the championship said that information regarding a 12-round schedule "does not accurately represent next season's schedule."
Superleague confirmed that a full calendar will be announced at a later date. |
Hope they do not play the same bullshit game as A1GP. _________________

Superleague schedule grows for 2010
By Matt Beer
Superleague Formula has unveiled a calendar of 12 events for 2010 - making its third season double the length of last year's championship.
The football-themed series opens with its maiden appearance at Silverstone in April, nearly three months earlier in the year than its 2009 opener was held.
It retains all its '09 venues bar the troubled Donington Park, but still visits the UK twice with a date at Brands Hatch joining Silverstone on the schedule.
Superleague also makes its debut at Assen in Holland, and at Germany's Nurburgring and Oschersleben - although the Spa and Adria dates mooted on the provisional calendar last autumn did not make the final schedule.
The series' competition director Robin Webb is pleased with the balance of high-profile venues and circuits where Superleague has an established fanbase.
"Although we've had to make some changes in the last few weeks, I'm extremely happy with the new schedule," he said.
"There's a great mix of circuits with some existing and ex-F1 venues supplemented by regional tracks which are ideal given their location. Jarama's proximity to Madrid for instance allowed local Atletico fans the chance to come along and support their team this year, a factor which helped attract 30,000 people.
"With more established drivers also taking an interest in Superleague, I'm confident that 2010 will prove a vintage season."
The circuit and date for the final round of the championship has yet to be confirmed, but Webb hinted it would be outside Europe.
"We are still looking at one or two non-European rounds at the end of the year," he said. "We are getting offers from outside of Europe, and our two major targets are the Middle East and South America."
2010 Superleague Formula calendar:
[Date - Circuit - Country]
Apr 3/4 - Silverstone, UK
May 15/16 - Assen, Holland
May 22/23 - Magny-Cours, France
Jun 19/20 - Jarama, Spain
Jun 26/27 - Nurburgring, Germany
Jul 3/4 - Oschersleben, Germany
Jul 17/18 - Zolder, Belgium
Jul 31/Aug 1 - Brands Hatch, UK
Sep 18/19 - Estoril, Portugal
Oct 2/3 - Monza, Italy
Nov 13/14 - Jerez, Spain
TBC - TBC |
All races are in Europe. But if they had any $$$ sense then the 12th race would be in US. _________________

F1 test for Superleague champion
By Steven English
This year's Superleague Formula champion will receive a Formula 1 test drive as the series announces its expansion at AUTOSPORT International today.
The prize fund has been increased to €5 million and the schedule increased from six to 12 weekends for its third season.
The top three finishers in the championship will receive €1 million, €500,000 and €250,000 respectively, while the superfinal of each race will pay out €100,000, €75,000, €50,000, €30,000, €20,000 and €10,000 to the top six finishers.
"It is the biggest prize fund in European motorsport," said Superleague competition director Robin Webb. "Starting at AUTOSPORT International, we are going to be inviting entries and applications for the championship. The person who holds the entry - and that could be a driver, a race team or a third party which could be a football club - will receive the prize money."
The F1 test drive is planned for the end of the Superleague season, but no team has yet been confirmed.
The six new venues on this year's calendar are Silverstone, Assen, Nurburgring, Oschersleben, Brands Hatch and Jerez.
"Silverstone have been fantastic to us and we're really pleased to be starting our season on the famous grand prix circuit," added Webb. "Brands is another superb addition.
"We are looking at one or two non-European rounds at the end of the year. We are getting offers from outside of Europe and our two major targets are the Middle East and South America." |
That's great news - maybe some ex-CC driver will have a shot at F1. _________________

Buurman gets AC Milan drive for 2010
By Matt Beer
Yelmer Buurman will drive for the Atech-run AC Milan team in this year's Superleague Formula.
The 23-year-old Dutchman has been a Superleague regular since the football-themed series' inception - taking second in the inaugural championship for PSV Eindhoven (Azerti) and taking Zakspeed's Anderlecht entry to fourth last year. Atech ran 2009 Superleague champion Adrian Valles' Liverpool car.
"I am happy to be back in Superleague Formula with last year's championship-winning team and I look forward to scoring for a top club," said Buurman.
"AC Milan is one of the best clubs in the world and I am proud to defend their honours. After being second and fourth in the championship over the last two years I will now go for the top.
"I only have one aim and that is winning the championship for and with AC Milan. I am ready for it and I'd like to thank everyone at Atech GP for their confidence in my capabilities."
Team boss David Hayle said Buurman has long been a target for his squad.
"I'm very pleased to have finally penned a deal with Yelmer who I've known from his Formula Renault days," said Hayle.
"Over the years I've watched him grow up and over the last two seasons he has proven to be a particularly strong contender in Superleague Formula, finishing second and fourth. This season we'll be looking to go one stage further with him and I expect him to be in the fight for the championship." |
Kudos to Buurman, maybe one day he'll graduate to IndyCar. _________________

Walker signs up for Superleague
By Steven English
James Walker will drive for Liverpool in this season's Superleague Formula.
The 26-year-old Jerseyman has raced in Formula Renault 3.5 for the last three seasons and also contested four Superleague races with Borussia Dortmund and Glasgow Rangers in 2008, winning at Jerez.
"Being from the small island of Jersey I'm very proud of where I come from," said Walker. "I know the people of Liverpool have a very strong sense of identity too and that the football club is at the heart of that. I hope I can make them proud by winning in 2010.
"After having challenged for the title in World Series last year I felt that this year I needed to be somewhere new. F1 is still my goal so it was important for me to stay focused on single-seater racing. I've had many good offers to move into GT and endurance racing and also to make the move to America, but the move to Superleague Formula feels right.
"GP2 would have been the next step but, as everyone knows, coming up with the money to compete there is extremely difficult. The F1 dream is still very much still alive and I came very close to securing a third driver role in F1 for 2010. I'm looking forward to getting stuck in now in Superleague Formula. Having spent a couple of days with the team I can see how committed they are about making sure we have what we need to win. Winning is all we are interested in."
The 2010 Superleague season begins at Silverstone on April 3-4. |
