IndyCar Series to begin season in Brazil with full lineup
By Curt Cavin
For all the talk of a strained economic climate and challenging television package, the Izod IndyCar Series will start its season next week with one of its largest fields of the past 10 years.
Thursday's confirmation that Milka Duno will drive one of Dale Coyne Racing's two cars means the series has 22 confirmed entries for the street course race in Sao Paulo, Brazil, with two more likely forthcoming: Dale Coyne's second car, driven either by Alex Lloyd or Firestone Indy Lights champion J.R. Hildebrand, and a car at KV Racing Technology for newcomer James Rossiter.
IndyCar opened 2009 at Homestead-Miami Speedway with 22 cars, and the series has had more than 24 at the season's first race only once (25 in 2008) since changing equipment in 2003. The average size of the season-opening field over the past seven years is 21.3.
Brazilian rookie Ana Beatriz's deal with Dreyer & Reinbold Racing is for only the race in her hometown, but various part-time deals are in place to strengthen the field at other events.
Sarah Fisher Racing has Sarah Fisher scheduled for nine races, the first March 28 in St. Petersburg, Fla. Fisher has former Indy Lights champion Jay Howard signed for five more races.
Davey Hamilton has a three-race arrangement with the reconfigured Luczo Dragon/de Ferran Motorsports team that has Raphael Matos set for all 17 races. Paul Tracy figures to have at least three events -- Indianapolis, Toronto and Edmonton -- as the fourth driver at KV.
Ryan Hunter-Reay's ride at Andretti Autosport hasn't been confirmed for a full season, but it is expected to be. Team 3G plans to start in St. Pete with Richard Antinucci. Mario Moraes figures to land somewhere.
League chief steward Brian Barnhart likes the lineup, although he knows Graham Rahal and Tomas Scheckter are among those currently rideless drivers who need to be part of it.
"We're very pleased," Barnhart said Thursday. "We're looking at 23 full-timers, maybe 24. Then there's Sarah, Jay Howard, Davey and a few of those deals out there. I think a lot of it speaks to the stability of the rules and the people who have the equipment."
At issue is a lack of U.S. drivers. Only Danica Patrick and Marco Andretti have full-time rides.
At the first race will be six drivers from Brazil (Helio Castroneves, Vitor Meira, Beatriz, Tony Kanaan, Matos and Mario Romancini), four from England (Dan Wheldon, Justin Wilson, Mike Conway and Rossiter), two from Australia (Will Power and Ryan Briscoe), two from Japan (Takuma Sato and Hideki Mutoh), two from Venezuela (Duno and E.J. Viso), and one each from New Zealand (Scott Dixon), Scotland (Dario Franchitti), Canada (Alex Tagliani) and Switzerland (Simona de Silvestro). |
And no Graham Rahal - what a fuckin' joke !!! _________________

Lloyd gets Coyne seat for Brazil
By Matt Beer
Dale Coyne Racing has named Alex Lloyd as the driver of its second car for this weekend's IndyCar opener in Sao Paulo.
The team will announce its full 2010 driver plans at round two of the championship in St Petersburg two weeks later.
Lloyd has been hunting for a full-time IndyCar seat since dominating the 2007 Indy Lights championship. He was taken on by Ganassi as a development driver, but the team was unable to find the backing to run him in its main squad, and he was limited to two Indianapolis 500 outings with satellite operations.
Having parted company with Ganassi to look for other opportunities last summer, he drove for Newman/Haas/Lanigan in the 2009 finale at Homestead and had hoped to contest the full 2010 season with the team before a sponsorship deal fell through.
The 25-year-old Briton recently tested for Dale Coyne at Sebring and will join Milka Duno in the team's line-up this weekend. |
BTW, Dale Coyne plans to make an official announcement sometime before St.Pete race. _________________

Dixon leads first practice in Brazil
By Matt Beer
Scott Dixon set the fastest time in the opening free practice session of the IndyCar Series season in Sao Paulo.
The former champion stopped the clocks at 1m31.7707s for Ganassi as the field acclimatised to the new Brazilian street track that will host tomorrow's opener.
Three different teams filled the top three, with Penske's Ryan Briscoe and Andretti Autosport's Tony Kanaan claiming second and third, both two tenths of a second down on Dixon.
Penske's Will Power and Dreyer & Reinbold's Mike Conway completed the top five, followed by Ryan Hunter-Reay in his debut with Michael Andretti's team.
New squad Fazzt also made an encouraging start to its season, with Alex Tagliani taking ninth place. Top rookie was HVM's Simona de Silvestro in 12th.
Reigning champion Dario Franchitti was only 17th, though. The Ganassi driver had an early trip down an escape road, then had to park his car in the pits after damaging his suspension against the Turn 8 wall.
Franchitti was not the only driver caught out by the new track. Marco Andretti (Andretti Autosport) also went off course in the opening minutes, Conquest's rookie Mario Romancini did severe rear end damage to his car when he hit the Turn 3 wall, and Milka Duno brought the session to a slightly early end when she spun under acceleration out of the final corner and nosed into the opposite barrier.

Dixon stays on top in second session
By Matt Beer
Scott Dixon was quickest again in second practice in Sao Paulo, as the treacherous new street track continued to provide a stern test for the IndyCar field.
In a repeat of the first session result, Ganassi driver Dixon led the way ahead of Penske's Ryan Briscoe and Andretti Autosport's Tony Kanaan - with Dixon's margin over the field up to half a second this time.
Briscoe was one of several drivers to have incidents during the session, spinning and brushing the wall on the pits straight. Bumpy and dusty, the straight past the main grandstands is proving to be one of the biggest challenges on the circuit, with drivers having to feather the throttle and making constant steering corrections to keep pointing in the right direction.
While Briscoe avoided major contact in his incident, Ana Beatriz was less fortunate when she lost control near the same spot. Her Dreyer & Reinbold car hit the wall and rearranged its left front suspension, with the session extended by 10 minutes as it took the marshals some time to retrieve the stranded Dallara-Honda.
Other incidents in the session included a very early escape road visit for Luczo Dragon/de Ferran driver Raphael Matos, spins for Dale Coyne Racing's Alex Lloyd and Andretti Autosport's Danica Patrick, and a late crash by Hideki Mutoh, who nosed his Newman/Haas/Lanigan car into the Turn 3 wall.
New team Fazzt continued to be one of the stars of the weekend, with Alex Tagliani taking fifth place behind Penske's Will Power.
Andretti duo Ryan Hunter-Reay and Marco Andretti, Helio Castroneves in the third Penske, and KV team-mates Mario Moraes and EJ Viso rounded out the top ten.
